History

With a history spanning over six decades, the GCBA remains committed to fostering strong ties between the German and Canadian communities through cultural and business initiatives.

1963: The German Canadian Business & Professional Association (GCBA) is established to promote cultural exchange and business relations between Germany and Canada. Horst Müller becomes the first President, leading the organization’s efforts to elevate German-Canadian business standards.

1964: The GCBA hosts its inaugural events, including a successful costume party at the Villa Hotel. The first Annual General Meeting is held, setting the stage for a year of engaging activities and networking opportunities.

1969: In response to Canada’s new multiculturalism policy, the GCBA introduces Oktoberfest to share German culture with Canadians. The event becomes a beloved annual tradition.

1986: The GCBA plays a prominent role in Expo ’86, organizing the Bavarian Garden Restaurant, which proves to be a major success, generating $1.6 million in profits.

1988: GCBA member Klaus Fuerness spearheads the “Germanica” conference, a significant 3-day event showcasing German culture and fostering business connections.

1995: Beatrice Schreiber joins the GCBA, eventually assuming the role of President in 2005, alternating leadership with Hubertus Liebrecht. Her tenure marks a period of growth and innovation for the association.

2014: The GCBA’s featured tent at the European festival showcases German culture and business, highlighting the association’s ongoing commitment to cultural exchange and community engagement.

2024: Today, the GCBA continues its mission under the new leadership of Andrea Basche as a successor of former longtime President Beatrice Schreiber.
