Political and Economic Insights from Germany and Canada

We’re proud to share a briefing letter from the DKG (Deutsch Kanadische Gesellschaft in Germany) that provides some updates about the political and economic landscape in both Canada and Germany. Here are a few highlights:

  • Elections Shape Coverage in Both Canada and Germany: The recent early federal election in Germany took place last Sunday, while Ontario residents cast their votes for their provincial parliament. In Canada, federal snap elections are expected, with the political landscape influenced by the race to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party. On top of that, unexpected resignations from the premiers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island have added to the political shake-up. The looming threat of new tariffs from the U.S. President is also a major concern.

  • Canada as the Guest Country at Hannover Messe: As you might know, Canada is the guest country at this year’s Hannover Messe, which is taking place from March 31 to April 4. Over 230 Canadian exhibitors and 250 delegates are expected to attend, marking a significant presence for Canada in the international business community.

  • Canada’s Economic Strategy Amid U.S. Tariff Threats: In response to the potential tariffs from the U.S., Canada is looking to strengthen its economic ties with the European Union. Minister of Trade Mary Ng has emphasized the focus on critical minerals and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in these efforts.

  • New Developments in Canada: Lufthansa Technik plans to build a new aircraft engine repair factory in Calgary by 2027. Meanwhile, Volkswagen and CGI are intensifying their collaboration to strengthen their business partnership.

For our German-speaking members, we’ve attached the full briefing letter here for further reading. It’s a comprehensive overview of the current situation and provides valuable insights into the political and economic developments shaping both nations.
